Bintulu, Sarawak – SK Kampung Tegageng recently organized their 35th Annual Sports Day held on August 17, 2024. The event included a number of sporting activities such as track and field events, and lucky draws.The sports day was a lively celebration showing the students enthusiasm for sports. Students from pre-school to Year 6 competed in a variety of competitions which was also attended and supported by their parents. Delegations from Pertama Ferroalloys attended to support and contribute to the event as well, alongside the local communities and also the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). Several distinguished guests attended the event, including Encik Edward Raja Eli, Secretary to Deputy Minister of MIPD Datuk Majang Renggi, Encik Thomas Ngaring, Special Officer N70 Samalaju, Mr. Yuki Nakamura, General Manager of Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd, Encik Robert Anak Ngalai, Manager of PTPTN Miri Branch and Encik Surdirman bin Musa, Chairman of PIBG SK Kampung Tegaggeng.

Pertama Ferroalloys had recently hosted a Labour Law talk on 19th of August designed to enhance its people management, through a comprehensive understanding of the legal aspects of Sarawak Labour Ordinance. Mr. Lio Siang Yun, Ketua Pejabat Tenaga Kerja Bintulu (Labour Department Bintulu) spoke during the event covering a range of topics including Sarawak Labour Law, Labour Compliance Checklist, Forced Labour Indicators, and Precedent Non-Compliance Cases. The approach presented during the session ensures the participants to be well-versed in the legal and practical aspects of Sarawak labor management.  With a limited capacity of 40 participants ranging from supervisory to executive levels, the talk covers how the principles of the Ordinance could be practiced by an organization, its human resources team, and the application to its employees.  Mr. Lio also presented on a few case studies on how the Ordinance could be exercised on a day-to-day labour crisis. Betong, Sarawak – The Sarawak State School Sports Council Handball Tournament 2024, held at the Riveria Sport Centre in Debak, Betong, has come to a successful conclusion. Organized by the Sarawak State Education Department, Sarawak State Sports Council, and the Betong District Education Office, the event showcased the talents of young handball players from across the state. The annual tournament, which rotates among different hosts based on the school calendar in Malaysia, was previously hosted by the Miri Education Office in 2023. This year in Betong, the competition featured four categories: under 12 boys, under 12 girls, under 18 boys, and under 18 girls. A total of 12 contingents participated in the under 12 categories, while 9 contingents competed in the under 18 categories, highlighting the depth of handball talent in Sarawak. The tournament spanned five days, from the 5th to the 9th of August, culminating in a prize-giving ceremony

Sibu, Sarawak – On August 10, 2024, the Sarawak Women’s Day 2024 celebration with the theme “Sarawak Women in Innovation and Technology,” paying tribute to the remarkable contributions of Sarawakian women to the state’s progress. The event, hosted at RH Hotel Sibu, attracted over a thousand attendees, with thousands more joining virtually, underscoring the widespread support for the empowerment of women in the region. Organized by the Jabatan Wanita dan Keluarga Sarawak (JWKS), the celebration was a vibrant acknowledgment of the pioneering roles women have played in the fields of innovation and technology. The event aimed to inspire and empower women to continue breaking barriers and driving change in these critical areas. In his keynote address, Sarawak’s Premier, Yang Berhormat Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive society and supporting women’s empowerment

In a panel discussion held in conjunction with Women’s Day 2024, industry leaders and academics came together to exchange ideas on empowering women in the workforce. The forum, moderated by Professor Ida Fatimahwati bt Adi Badiozaman from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, with invited panellists Yuki Nakamura, General Manager of Pertama Ferroalloys and Yang Berusaha Puan Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Senior Vice President for Corporate Services of Sarawak Energy Berhad. Yuki Nakamura, with over 25 years of experience in managerial roles in the banking and mining sectors and a national badminton player for Japan, emphasized the crucial role men play in encouraging gender equality in the industry. He drew parallels between the current situation in Sarawak and Japan 60 to 70 years ago, highlighting the historical preference for male employment and the traditional role of women as homemakers. A group of 15 engineers from Pertama Ferroalloys gathered at New World 3 on July 30th for an engaging session with the company’s Associate Director of AML, Board of Director, and General Manager, Mr. Yuki Nakamura. The event aimed to inspire and motivate the engineering team while providing insights into the company’s future direction.

In anticipation of Malaysia’s mandatory Electronic Invoicing (E-Invoice) system commencing on August 1st, 2024, Pertama is proactively equipping its staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate this significant transition.

Hosted by Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), a town hall session with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan was held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus to commemorate the 61st Sarawak Day celebration, focusing on the theme “A Way Toward Sustainable Sarawak”.

In a bid to strengthen the education and talent development initiatives in Sarawak, Pertama Ferroalloys extended a warm welcome to Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Roland Sagah, and Deputy Minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis.
